Many of the mothers I interviewed said that their compassion and ability to love their children was learned from their interactions with their own mothers. Olivia stated, “I got my compassion from my mother, and I have come to recognize that my mother’s compassion and caring was essential in helping me manage the abuse I experienced. My mother put her children at the center of her life, and I do that for my children.”
Similarly, Fatima shares the importance of her mother’s love and dedication: “My mother was a good mother. We always knew that she loved us, and she was always available to us. In fact, she was able to give me some of the same things that I am able to give my daughter. That I can freely tell my daughter I love her comes from my mom, and that I can be attentive to her comes from my mom, and that I can be physically comforting comes from my mom.”
Tasha’s parents also provide a kind, caring, and nurturing relationship to her child: “I know that when I visit my parents things are easier for me, because the responsibility of caring for my daughter is shared, and my dad and mom take over. It is really appreciated. When my daughter visits them they give her a lot of time and attention. They cook with her, take her for walks, and play with her.”
